SME Bank targets to approve financing worth RM369 million to eligible companies for their business expansion during SME Bank Mini XCESS for Northern Region. The target is in line with the economic opportunities in the northern area and particularly in the state of Perak. Since inception, SME Bank Northern Regional Centre has recorded a financing portfolio worth over RM694 million and assisted more than 974 customers. This indicates that the economic activities in Northern Region are vibrant and it provides abundance of opportunities for SME businesses and its ecosystem to grow.
SME Bank Mini XCESS is an annual event held with the aim to reach out to the SME entrepreneurs directly. Through this programme, the Bank approved RM132 million worth of financing in 2016. International Trade and Industry Minister II, Dato' Sri Ong Ka Chuan urged Malaysian SMEs to take full advantage of the immense opportunities created by China's "One Belt, One Road" initiative. "The rise of China and the economic openings this has brought about are particularly relevant for our SMEs, given Malaysia's strategic position as a gateway to the 625-million strong ASEAN market, ” he said.
Dato' Sri Ong made the remarks in his address when officiating the "SME Solutions Expo 2016" organised by SME Business Media International on 30 September, 2016.
SME Solutions Expo 2016 gathers over 100 vendors specialising in technology, market -access, capacity development and financing for SMEs. Datuk J. Jayasiri, MITI’s Secretary General, also addressed the SME owners and the companies that attended the forum together with other industry experts and leaders.

MITI Minister II, YB Dato' Sri Ong Ka Chuan witnessed the signing of the JV agreement between Sakamoto R&D and Azman Hamzah (M) to design and manufacture automotive plastic fuel tank on 29 August, 2016.
MAI also signed a MOU with the JV company to coordinate the transfer of technology for the purpose:
1. To reduce imports of plastic fuel tanks worth RM200 M.
2. To benefit other domestic vendors with the advanced plastic technology of Sakamoto R&D Japan.
Perodua has played a vital role in making the JV a reality while facilitated by MITI and MIDA.
